Everyone wants to know what’s going to happen with Oscar Piastri next year.
He’s got an incredible record with championships in F2, F3 and Formula Renault but he still hasn’t secured a full-time F1® drive.
A team will surely pick him up for 2023, but which one?
We’ve analysed the realistic contenders for Piastri’s services.
Alpine F1 Team
As a reserve driver for Alpine, it would make a lot of sense for them to give Piastri the call up for 2023. Things might not be that simple, however.
Fernando Alonso has already stated his intentions to continue in Formula 1® and Esteban Ocon has a long-term deal to the end of 2024.
It’s also a possibility that Alpine might try to secure the services of Pierre Gasly to make it an all-French dream team.
These scenarios could leave Piastri in a tough position and forced to look elsewhere for his rookie season.
Williams F1 Team
This famous team has shown a willingness to blood upcoming stars of the future.
Valtteri Bottas, George Russell and Nico Rosberg all started their careers at Williams and have gone on to enjoy success.
Taking on the Aussie could be a win-win situation for both driver and team.
You only have to look at the positive results of taking on a motivated young driver like Russell who was able to put Williams in the spotlight with some incredible performances in qualifying.
Piastri isn’t going to be able to provide a massive budget, but it could be worth it to help secure a better position in the constructors’ championship.
Either Nicholas Latifi or Alex Albon would have to make way for this to happen.
Aston Martin F1 Team
Let’s face it, things have not entirely gone to plan for Aston Martin for its big return to Formula 1®.
They took on an experienced hand in Sebastian Vettel to help drive them to championship glory, but that goal is still well out of reach.
It might be time for the team to try a different approach and take on a young star like Piastri.
Young guns like Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris and Russell are now dominating the sport, so youth could be the way of the future.
Piastri fits that criteria should Vettel look to retire at the end of the season.
