Sato joined In the Fast Lane co-hosts Matt Clayton and Michael Lamonato to remember his 2002 debut for Jordan in Australia, racing against Michael Schumacher at Indianapolis and the impact of his Indy 500 wins in his native Japan.

Sato assessed the 2021 Formula 1® rookie season of compatriot Yuki Tsunoda with AlphaTauri and claimed he has the speed and the potential but just needs more experience.

“Every single one of us has observed Yuki’s speed, he has tremendous speed and he’s a very fast guy but he’s only 20 years old,” said Sato.

“We mustn’t forget the situation he’s in right now…Yuki has to go against one of the fastest young guys in teammate Pierre… but the team know what Yuki is capable of but for the outsider, it is very difficult to judge who has got the potential,” he continued.

“I believe Yuki has massive potential to succeed in Formula 1, he just needs to have more experience... it’s not fair to judge as he’s having quite a challenging time, I think once he has got more comfortable with the environment and some confidence back… he has everything, we just need to be patient, wait and support him.”

The podcast is available on Spotify, Google Podcasts and Apple Podcasts platforms.
