Ricciardo’s non-competitive McLaren in Canada
Monday, 20 June 2022
The Australian’s car lacked race pace.
The competitiveness of the McLaren between Saturday and Sunday’s performances couldn’t be starker for Daniel Ricciardo.
After a solid P9 in Qualifying, it seemed Ricciardo would be able to challenge for the ‘best of the rest’ title at the Canadian Grand Prix.
A relatively uneventful race for the McLaren drivers saw the pair midpack through most of the race.
However, a botched double-stack pitstop for McLaren summed up their race after a slow stop with Ricciardo delayed the arrival of teammate Lando Norris.
On top of the slow pitstop for Ricciardo, the team put the wrong tyres on Norris’ car, cementing his P15 place finish at the chequered flag.
Ricciardo was still sitting in the points towards the tail end of the race, though Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll passed him with five laps remaining.
Neither McLaren left Canada with championship points, with Ricciardo crossing the line in P11.
“Unfortunately, not the best Sunday for us,” said Ricciardo.
“We simply didn’t have the pace, and then had to manage a few other things as well. That was tough, it just put us too far out of contention.”
“So, otherwise, we’ve got to have a look, see where we can go better, and then just clean a few things up.”
