Daniel Ricciardo’s Sao Paulo Grand Prix ended on the opening lap after a collision with Kevin Magnussen caused an early exit in the Australian’s second-last race for McLaren.
Ricciardo hit the Haas driver sending both out of the race and causing a safety car.
Sky Sports F1 commentator, Martin Brundle, said: “It’s all going to go horribly wrong... that is 100 per cent Daniel’s fault.”
The collision was investigated after the race, with Ricciardo being handed a three-place grid penalty by the stewards for Abu Dhabi next week.
Ricciardo expressed his disappointment after the race.
“Firstly, I’m disappointed as it’s always difficult when your race is over so quickly,” said the McLaren driver.
“I touched the back of Kevin, and it’s a shame. I think the biggest disappointment is that it was such a small touch, but it had massive consequences. I didn’t expect him to spin, I guess that was just the angle that we touched and it just unloaded his rear.”
“I feel most times, a small touch like that, you can get away with it. So it was pretty unfortunate for both of us. It was an eventful race, so, it’s a shame not to have been out there. Apologies to the team here and back at home but we will reset and go one more time in Abu Dhabi.”
Ricciardo's teammate Lando Norris also failed to finish the race, marking a tough weekend for McLaren.
The final race of the FIA Formula 1® season takes place next weekend in Abu Dhabi between 18-20 November.
