Ricciardo praised by a former world champion after the French GP

Monday, 25 July 2022

A second consecutive points finish for the Australian.

Daniel Ricciardo collected two championship points after a ninth-place finish at the French Grand Prix.

The solid result is the second consecutive points finish for the Australian, who was praised by the 2016 world champion Nico Rosberg.

“I think it would be good to praise Daniel on his weekend because in qualifying, he was just over a tenth (of a second) away from Lando,” Rosberg said in commentary for Sky Sports.

“Now in the race, on race pace, he’s right there with him, stuck behind him. I think it’s a good weekend for Daniel. He’s on the right track to finding his way again.

“I think he sees that himself that is was a positive weekend. Of course, it wasn’t the greatest of all time, but it was another step in the right direction to always be very close to his teammate.

“It’s something he can build on further, and that’s great for Daniel because it’s been such a difficult time.

“It’s great to see him getting this positive momentum going; that’s awesome. It’s hard work that pays off eventually.”

Ricciardo was disappointed with his qualifying performance but made up for it in the race’s opening stages.

After gaining a place on the opening lap, Ricciardo found himself trailing teammate Lando Norris.

Battles ensued between Ricciardo and Esteban Ocon, with the French driver getting the better of the McLaren driver in the end.

“It’s points so that’s a positive. It’s only ninth but still important,” said Ricciardo after the race.

“I had a bit of pace early in the stint and tried to get more out of it, but then it fell away a little too quickly so I definitely struggled from mid-stint onwards and didn’t have the pace to run with the Alpines and Lando. I felt like I did the best that I could – but it’s not enough to make me happy.”

“Thanks again to everyone for the hard work in getting the upgrades to track this weekend and we’ll push to get more out of them over the next few races. Double-points but we’ll keep working.”

Ricciardo’s teammate Norris finished P7.

F1® teams and drivers don’t have to wait long until the next race weekend, with the Championship moving to Hungary for the Hungarian Grand Prix on the 29-31 July.
