Piastri Powers to Victory at Chinese GP in McLaren's Historic 1-2 Finish
Monday, 24 March 2025
The Australian had a strong weekend.
Oscar Piastri delivered a masterclass performance at the Chinese Grand Prix, converting pole position into a commanding victory as McLaren secured their 50th one-two finish in Formula 1® history.
The Australian driver showed remarkable maturity throughout the weekend at Shanghai International Circuit, dominating Sunday's race after an impressive qualifying session that landed him the coveted pole position. This triumph marks a significant milestone in Piastri's career, particularly at a track that proved challenging for him just 12 months ago.

From the moment the lights went out, Piastri maintained his advantage with a clean getaway, holding position at the front while his teammate Lando Norris made an early move to overtake George Russell for second place. The McLaren duo quickly established their dominance, though they weren't without challenges as both drivers began struggling with tyre graining on the Medium compound.
The race hinged on a one-stop strategy that few had anticipated. Piastri pitted on lap 14 for Hard tyres, with Norris following a lap later. Though the powerful undercut saw Norris briefly lose position to Russell after his stop, the Briton fought back to reclaim second place shortly afterward.
"It's been an incredible weekend, and the car has been mega the whole time," Piastri reflected after his victory. "The tyres behaved very differently to the earlier sessions in China but the race we've managed to pull-off this afternoon has been excellent. The support from the grandstands and all the papaya fans has been terrific and we can be proud of the 1-2 result we've secured through hard work."
The closing stages brought some unexpected drama when Norris began experiencing issues with his brake pedal. Russell closed rapidly on the final lap, adding tension to the McLaren garage, but Norris managed the situation expertly to maintain second position and complete the team's historic 1-2 finish.
McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella was effusive in his praise for Piastri's performance: "Oscar has been very impressive throughout the weekend, securing a well-deserved Pole and victory at a circuit he found tricky just 12 months ago." He also commended the team's quick adaptability after a less-than-ideal Sprint race earlier in the weekend, noting how they made crucial improvements that set up Sunday's success.
"We would have liked to have scored more points in the Sprint, but we must recognise how competitive the field is, and I'm pleased with how the team reacted as we transitioned into Qualifying and the Grand Prix, learning from the Sprint and making improvements which made today's result possible," Stella added.
For Piastri, the victory represents another step forward in his rapidly developing Formula 1® career, with the Australian continuing to impress in just his second season at the top level of motorsport. As the team now prepares for the upcoming triple-header starting in Japan, Piastri's confidence appears to be growing with each race.
"We'll debrief the entire weekend to look at the positives and the areas we need to work on before we head to Japan next month. A big thank you to everyone in papaya for their effort and support this weekend!" Piastri concluded.
