Thursday, 8 June 2023

Top-6 reasons Aussie fans should follow the sport in 2024.

Love F1® like us? Then we’ve got something for you.

The fastest and most exhilarating two-wheeled racing on the planet is headed back down under when the Qatar Airways Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix returns to Phillip Island this October.

Not familiar with MotoGP™?

Not to worry, we’ve compiled a list of the top 6 reasons we think Aussie F1® fans will love MotoGP™.

What is MotoGP™?

MotoGP™ is the premier class of motorcycle road racing, often considered the two-wheel equivalent of Formula 1®.

The world's best riders compete on prototype machines, which are highly advanced and powerful motorcycles designed specifically for racing.

The sport features renowned manufacturers such as Yamaha, Honda, Ducati, KTM, and Aprilia.

Known for its high speeds, intense competition, and cutting-edge technology, MotoGP™ is governed by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) and includes multiple races across the globe each season, attracting a passionate fan base and showcasing the pinnacle of motorcycle engineering and skill.

The reigning back-to-back champion is Francesco Bagnaia from Italy, and he rides for the Italian manufacturer Ducati.

1. It’s FAST! Like, seriously….

F1® is fast, but MotoGP™ accelerates even faster.

While Sergio Perez topped the charts in 2023, clocking a top speed of 341km/h at Albert Park, Italian MotoGP™ rider Enea Bastianini maxed his bike out at 356.4 km/h at the 2022 Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island.

If you also long for the days of the V12 engines that used to be used in Formula 1®, you’ll love the rumble of a MotoGP™ bike as it roars down Gardner Straight on The Island.

Don't forget your earplugs!

2. MotoGP™ is FULL of drama!

There’s nothing like seeing the world’s fastest riders, shoulder-to-shoulder, leaning into corners at high speed and extreme angles, all just millimetres from the asphalt – And with no harnesses and no such thing as a seat belt, watching MotoGP™ live is not for the faint-hearted.

You only have to look at the final lap of last year's Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix where FIVE riders were in contention for victory!

The last two MotoGP™ seasons have also BOTH gone down to the final round with thrilling title battles.

3. WE'VE GOT FOUR AUSSIES ON THE GRID

You'll have no shortage of Australian talent to cheer on at Phillip Island with four Aussies across all the classes.

Jack Miller is our MotoGP™️ contender with four premier-class victories to his name. The Queenslander has one of the best personalities on the grid and you could say he's our Daniel Ricciardo equivalent on two wheels!

We've also got Senna Agius who's competing in his very first Moto2™️ full season, as well as Joel Kelso and Jacob Roultone in Moto3™️.

4. A STAR-STUDDED Grid!

When the riders line up to start the 2024 Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, it will be World Champions galore.

Six-time MotoGP™️ champion and icon of the sport Marc Márquez will be fighting for his fourth #AustralianGP victory, joined by 2021 World Champion Fabio Quartararo and reigning back-to-back Champion Francesco ‘Pecco’ Bagnaia – that’s right, F1® might have a Checo, but MotoGP™ has a Pecco.

Also, keep an eye out for rising star Jorge Martin who fought for last year's championship until the final round and will likely do the same in 2024.

There's also Pedro Acosta who is shaping up to possibly be the greatest young talent the sport has ever seen!

5. RACING! RACING! RACING!

Struggling with late nights staying up until 1 am to watch F1® races? That's not a problem with MotoGP™.

The majority of European Sunday races start at 10:00 pm AEDT and only run for about 40 minutes. That's perfect for our Aussie time zone!

There have also been Sprint Races added to the schedule on Saturday since 2023, adding to an already jam-packed on-track schedule in the premier MotoGP™ class.

Motorsport fans will be spoilt for racing action with Moto2™ and Moto3™ also in action all weekend long.

6. We just love PHILLIP ISLAND!

If you’ve never been to the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, do yourself a favour and get down to The Island.

Just two hours from Melbourne and set against the wild waters of the Bass Strait, the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit is not just fast, it’s visually stunning and considered by many to be the best motorcycle circuit in the world.

The Qatar Airways Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix hits Phillip Island from 18 – 20 October and if you love F1® as much as we do, then a trip to Phillip Island this October might just be for you.

Like a day at Albert Park, an Island Pass (GA) ticket gives you access to all the on (and off) track action with HEAPS of incredible trackside viewing opportunities, the natural elevation of the circuit giving fans views of multiple corners, regardless of where you’re watching from.

There’s even a shuttle service (Catch-a-Coach) running between Melbourne and Phillip Island, letting you relax, put your feet up and let us take care of you on your journey down.

Whether it’s the speed, the danger, the drama, the sensory overload or simply an excuse for a day at the track with friends, we recommend trying something new and checking out MotoGP™ when Phillip Island roars to life this October.

Tickets for the #AustralianGP will go on sale from June 20th 2024.
