George Russell: I've got to keep improving if I want to be at the top

The Australian Grand Prix podcast In the Fast Lane has released its latest episode, featuring Williams’ Formula 1® driver, George Russell.

Russell joined In the Fast Lane co-hosts Matt Clayton and Michael Lamonato to discuss his 2019 F1® debut for Williams in Australia, his rivalries with peers like Lando Norris and reveals why he wanted a director role in the Grand Prix Drivers' Association alongside Sebastian Vettel.

When Russell reflected on the lessons learned from his memorable stand-in appearance at Mercedes, he said it gave him a taste of what it’s like to compete at the top, but he knows he can’t be complacent.

“I took away that fighting for the win for pole position is not easy…you’ve got to continuously keep on improving, I don’t come away thinking I could’ve won, I’m good enough, let's leave it there. I come away thinking yeah I got a taste of it but I’ve got to keep on improving if I want to be at the top,” said Russell.

The friendships between younger drivers of the paddock, like Norris and Russell, are often talked about in the media. Russell believes the pair have enjoyed a good relationship because they haven’t formed a fierce rivalry … yet.

“I think naturally our relationships are relatively good because there has been no reason to have intense falling outs, we’ve not crashed into each other on track, Lando and I battled in Formula 2, but we didn’t have any true battles, we didn’t go wheel-to-wheel or crash into each other, we had no reason to hate each.”

“Maybe that was the same with Lewis and Rosberg they were good friends back in the day, teammates, everything was hunky dory and then a few comings together, taking the championship down to the wire and then that relationship soon fizzles out,” he continued.
