Brazil’s imprint on F1’s record books is undeniable; six drivers have amassed 101 wins to make Brazil the third-most successful nation behind the UK and Germany in the sport’s history. But the pipeline of Brazilian talent has stalled since Felipe Massa retired in 2017; now, Gabriel Bortoleto is here to make his own name, and so far he’s doing a very good job of it.

The thought of Bortoleto being on the F1 grid after he only debuted in FIA Formula 3 two seasons ago would have been fanciful at best, but the 20-year-old replicated his rookie-season title with another in F2 last year, combining occasional race-winning bursts with unerring consistency and a cool head.
When you’re in the same company as Charles Leclerc, George Russell and Oscar Piastri as the only other drivers to win F3 and F2 successively as a rookie, you’re clearly doing something very, very right.
