Porsche’s lightweight 904 GTS was a mid-engined sports-racing car which utilised a pressed steel box-section frame wrapped in a striking fibreglass bodyshell which served as a structural element.
The 904, of which just 106 examples were built, was designed by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche. Against all comers, the 904 was immediately successful in GT racing in 1964 - winning the Targa Florio outright along with class victory at the Sebring 12-hour race.
Numerous track and hillclimb successes followed, the 904 being the forerunner of a long line of Porsche endurance sports-racers.
Originally planned to run the new 911 flat six, the 2-litre Carrera four-cam engine matched with a strengthened 911 five-speed gearbox and ZF limited-slip differential was used initially in the 904s before some 6 and 8-cylinder variants were produced.
This car - a rare toolroom tribute built by Martin & Walker UK - incorporates genuine original Porsche components and is believed to be the only example of a 904 Porsche in Australia. It runs an early 2.7 litre 6-cylinder Porsche engine, fed by downdraft Webers and coupled to 901 5-speed transmission giving approximately 205 HP.
