This is the 5th Elfin Catalina (chassis 625) and was first driven by Frank Matich as an Elfin works car (both Formula Junior and 1500cc) in NSW after a test day by Elfin in NSW and was retained by Matich for a short period.
The car passed to Charlie Smith in 1963 who ran it successfully including a class win and outright 4th at the 1963 Bathurst 100 with a win in the NSW Formula Junior championship at Catalina Park, 3rd outright in the Blue Mountains City Council Trophy Race and 1st outright in the 1964 Lakeside Trophy Race.
In 1964 Charlie ran the car in the Australian GP as 1.5 litre car but DNF after mechanical issues.
The car later passed through several hands including Jacques Sapir and Ian Kaufman as well as being driven by Rocky Tresise.
The car has had a long history in historic racing from the late 1980's until the present time.
