1967 Brabham BT23E

Racing Past Presented by Shannons Insurance.

Sir Jack Brabham famously won his 3rd F1 World Championship in 1966 driving a Repco Brabham produced by his own company.

The only Formula One driver ever to have done so. For the next 3 years he made occasional appearances on Australian soil, driving a purpose-built Tasman version of his BT (Brabham Tauranac) using a 2.5 litre version of the Repco engine that had also powered Denny Hulme to the 1967 Championship.

The BT23E was a development of the previous year’s BT23.

At Warwick Farm the 740 series Repco had oil issues and Brabham finished only 7th.

For the 1968 Australian Grand Prix the team installed the new 830 series and Brabham landed pole position. Unfortunately, oil issues again arose, leading to a DNF. Racing identity Bob Jane then bought the car for John Harvey who had many successes in it.

Harvey went on to partner Peter Brock in the Holden Dealer Team and win Bathurst in latter years.

The current owner has returned the car to Australian Grand Prix specifications after purchasing the car in England in 2018.
